My youngest sister’s two weeks here flew by, and we weren’t able to make the trip out to our favourite little tearoom, the neatest place with the yummiest quiche and salad and just oozing with atmosphere.
And so I decided to come as close as I could at my house, and invited everyone to my place for lunch the day on my sister’s last day here.
I love planning these things, I like to cook, I like to decorate and get all set up, but then I wish I could hide in a corner and just watch the proceedings. Hospitality is not my strong point.
I also wish I could hire a maid to take care of the housework before and after I am hospitable. Housework is also not my strong point.
We had a lovely lunch. I was pleased when all the recipes I tried turned out well. (Some of us have to try out new stuff when guests are coming over.) I will be making quiche more often – so easy and so yummy!
I served three quiches: Bacon and Mushroom; Green Chili; and Broccoli; two salads: Greek and Orange, tea biscuits, fresh from the oven, and two desserts: Strawberry Pretzel Squares and Coconut Cupcakes. I also made Mom’s Hash Brown Casserole for those who don’t care for quiche.
I like to do things like this, I just wish I was a more capable housekeeper and a more confident host. Both of which would improve with practice. So I guess I’ll just have to keep practicing.
I’ve been craving more quiche ever since. It was very yummy!!!
Mmmmmm. Well, if you want to practice on me, I’d most certainly be a willing participant. I LOVE quiche!
You know what….my Gram was the greatest person to go visit (and I grew up next door to her). She was a great cook and she liked to sit and watch everyone have fun. She was the warmth in the room….like a wood stove.
One day I heard her chuckle about her poor housekeeping skills and her lack of ease in group conversation. I said, “But Gram, you are the best hostess EVER! How can you say that??” And she said, “Well, Honey, if you think so then my mother’s advice works. She told me that if you look people in the eye and have genuine love for them….no one will notice the house….and if you listen and let people talk….no one will notice that you aren’t adding much.”
Your post reminds me so much of Gram. And I miss her every day. She was gently swept into the arms of her True Love last Mother’s Day. I have tears in my eyes just typing about her.
If you are ANYTHING like my Gram, you are the greatest hostess around.
Lovingly,
Shelby
Sounds like we missed a great opportunity to EAT at your home last month. We will get that rectified. I’m still alive and will be sending you an email soon… promise!
It was delicious, and you were a great hostess. Stop being so hard on yourself! I hope someday I can have that many people over to my house for lunch, cook and prepare as much as you did, look cute in a summer dress and smile while I watched my guests totally stuff their faces!!
